In 2002, U.S trade with sub-Saharan Africa which totaled $25 billion was concentrated in the energy sector and passenger aircraft sales. Now, American exports to Africa and investments are rapidly diversifying. There are more resources available to both small and medium sized American companies to do business in Africa than thought possible years back. The African continent is constructing new airports, building roads, and revamping telecommunications systems. More advancement is being made to enhance its Internet and IT capabilities and most state-owned industries are also being privatized.
Foreign companies are, for the first time, approaching the continent's more than 600 million people as a legitimate market segment that cannot be ignored. There are huge export opportunities for everything from refurbished construction equipments and frozen chicken to beauty products and solar lighting appliances.
There are great import opportunities to explore. The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is offering thirty-eight sub-Saharan African nations the most liberal access to the U.S. market. This offer is available to any country or region that does not have a free trade agreement with the United States. In 2002, AGOA imports increased by ten percent to $9 billion, in which the textile and apparel imports totaled $803 million, in 2002, more than double the 2001 figure. In 1996, most media headlines picture Africa in its struggles with its political affairs, poverty, havoc, revenge and fefugee experiences. A step away from these front pages reveals more depth and wealth about Africa which is very optimistic and promising in opening up into the world of international trade.
